What grads can do
With the practical skills and hands-on training you’ll get at BCIT, you’ll be prepared for a variety of jobs in tourism such as event management, hotel sales, and destination marketing. In fact, at least half of the students in this program are hired by their practicum or business consulting project host.
Additionally, you’ll have the chance to apply your course credits from your diploma toward your Bachelor of Business Administration part-time or full-time for even more earning potential and wider job opportunities.

Open to applications beginning October 1st (or next business day).
All students must complete the first year of the Marketing Management program before continuing to one of the second year diploma options (Entrepreneurship, Marketing Communication, Professional Real Estate, Professional Sales, or Tourism Management).
Entrance requirements
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains.
- English: two years of education in English in an English-speaking country with one of the following:
- English Studies 12 (67%) or
- English First Peoples 12 (67%) or
- Acceptable equivalent high school course or
- 3.0 credits of post-secondary English, humanities or social sciences (67%) from a recognized institution
What if I don’t meet these English requirements? - Math: one of the following:
- Pre-Calculus 11 (67%) or
- Foundations of Math 11 (67%) or
- Workplace Math 11 (67%) or
- Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses or
- OPMT 0199 - Math for Business (67%) or

- Option preference: choose one of the following in your online application:

Options are assigned starting in Level 3 and are not guaranteed. By stating a preference, you help the department plan for capacity. Entry to each option is competitive by GPA and other factors. Where space issues arise, students may get their alternate choice.
Continuation requirements
Midway through the second term of first year, students either confirm or select their first and second choice for the next year of the program. The second-year options are:

Entry to each option is competitive by GPA and other factors. Where space issues arise, students may get their alternate choice.
Recommended for success
- Applicants are urged to attend an information session offered throughout the year. These are free of charge and are open to all to attend. Registration is requested, but not required.
- Strong mathematic skills are required for success in BCIT Business diplomas. Students accepted into this program will be contacted starting in April regarding the completion of a math assessment test. If you score below a 67% on this assessment test, or feel that you would like to upgrade your math skills regardless, you should complete OPMT 0199 or OPMT 0023.
International applicants
This program is available to international applicants. A valid study permit is required prior to starting the program.
Students enrolled in this program must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation. A co-op work permit is required prior to starting the work component.
Transfer credit
Transfer credit may be granted for courses completed at BCIT or another post-secondary institution where the learning outcomes duplicate those of the BCIT course. As per Admission Procedure 5003-PR1, the department reserves the right to determine the granting of credit where appropriate.
Applications for transfer will be accepted up to day 14 of the term; an official transcript and a course outline where appropriate must be provided or be on file with BCIT to process the request. A maximum of two courses per level are eligible for credit through this process.

Conditions
You may be eligible to apply to an advanced level of the program through either re-admission or direct entry. Please note that applications are considered based on:
- Complete applications: you must show proof that you have completed (or are registered in) all requirements to be considered.
- Competitive entry: if the number of applicants exceeds available seats, BCIT will accept those deemed to have the best opportunity for success.
- Seat availability: confirmation may not be available until approximately one week before the term begins.
Re-admission
You can apply for re-admission if you:
- were previously admitted to this program and completed part of it at BCIT and
- want to re-enter the program at an advanced level.

It is recommended that you apply when you have met all of the entrance requirements. If you are currently registered in a course, please indicate this on the self-assessment form.
Once your application has been assessed and has been approved for direct entry, a seat must become available in the program you have selected. The Admissions department must wait until the current students obtain their final grades in either December or May to determine how many seats will become available for direct entry applicants.
You are requested to specify your program option preference(s). Option selection will be completed after current level 2 full-time student transfer requests are processed. Notification of option selection will take place in late June. If a seat is not available in your preferred option an alternate option may be assigned. Your requested option cannot be guaranteed at time of application.
In order to maintain a competitive application, it is recommended that you take no more than two courses per term ahead of time. A maximum of two courses per level are eligible for credit. Note that this will not reduce your full-time program tuition.

You’ll learn in traditional classrooms with industry professionals, as well as with hands-on learning through consulting projects. Your practicum in the second year gives you the opportunity to work with a real client in the industry to earn practical experience and industry contacts before you even graduation. Additionally, you’ll study essential skills and topics for tourism, including live entertainment events, global marketing, digital branding, travel and tour management, and more.

Program Details
In the BCIT Tourism Management program, you’ll focus on the business of tourism to prepare for a leadership role in BC’s second largest industry. You’ll also develop a solid understanding of core business concepts that include marketing, finance, and leadership.
The range of courses in this program are designed to give you a broad range of knowledge that is directly applicable to your everyday responsibilities in your chosen career. Additionally, through your courses and your hands-on practicum with clients facing real-world challenges, you’ll develop industry contacts, relevant job skills, experience and confidence to prepare you for a career in one of the most exciting industries.

Grading
In order to be eligible to continue into the second year of the marketing management program a student must have successfully completed all required first year courses or equivalencies.
- At the end of first year, students that have failed MKTG 2202, MKTG 2243, and/or any three or more courses not in Marketing will not be allowed to proceed in the program. If a student wishes to re-enter the program, they must complete the outstanding courses and then re-apply to the program.
- At the end of the first year of the program, students that have failed up to two courses not in Marketing may continue in the program if the failed courses are successfully completed at BCIT before term start. If completing the courses at another institution, students must provide proof of registration for the outstanding course(s) no later than 60 calendar days prior to the term start date.
Students described above will be competing for a limited number of remaining seats available in second year options. Their option applications will only be processed once all first year courses are successfully completed, reducing their chances of receiving their first or second choice.

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2019-2021 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2018-2020 graduates and for Degree 2017-2019 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. Faculty, Advisors & Staff
School of Business faculty at BCIT are industry experts that treat teaching as their primary mission. You will learn in the classroom directly from these experienced professionals. All lectures and labs are facilitated by experienced professionals. We do not use teaching assistants.
The core courses in the marketing tourism management program are taught by subject matter experts. Students have consistently remarked about the availability and commitment of the instructors at BCIT.
David Tikkanen, Program Head Tourism Management
David has over 35 years’ of tourism and hospitality experience including senior sales roles at properties including the Westin Bayshore, Fairmont Waterfront, and Metropolitan Hotel. David is the former Conference Sales Manager for Tourism Whistler and ran his own destination marketing company, Entrée Canada, which served incentive clients from global luxury brands.
Geoffrey Bird, Faculty
Geoffrey has been teaching in the department since 2004, bringing extensive experience as a copywriter and creative communicator with organizations including Kiwi Collection, Big House Communications, Columbus Group, Go Direct, Bryant, Fulton & Shee, Rogers, and local radio stations. He is an accomplished photographer who shares his view of local wildlife on Instagram @geoffrey_bird and shares his office with pups Coco and Kula.
Erica Halvorsen, Faculty
Erica has over 20 years’ experience teaching adults the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. In addition to teaching in day and PTS, Erica also facilitates branding workshops for entrepreneurs through the YMCA’s Self Employment program, is a co-founder and contributor at todaysworkshop.com, and is a consultant who helps small business owners and organizations with branding, marketing and communications at ericajane.ca. Years ago, she acquired a B.A.in Honours English from UBC, which wasn’t totally useless, after all.
Roz Phipps, Faculty
Roz has over 30 years of marketing and sales experience in the tourism and insurance industries. Previously, Roz was the Director of Sales and Market Development at Tourism Whistler and a member of the sales and marketing team at Destination British Columbia. More recently, Roz was the Vice President/Client Executive for one of British Columbia’s largest commercial insurance brokerages. Roz worked with a wide variety of business clients and as a result of her vast sales experience, has developed a detailed understanding of the issues facing businesses today.
Matt Shepherd, Faculty
Matt has more than 25 years’ experience in the market and opinion research industry having worked for large international agencies such as the Kantar Group in the UK, and gained a wealth of local agency experience in Vancouver B.C. with Mustel Group. He has designed and executed both qualitative and quantitative research for a wide variety of clients in both public and private sectors.

Erin is a digital marketing strategist with over 15 years’ experience in agencies, client-side, and as a consultant. She has worked across industries and sectors improving the online communications impact of global and local companies.

Business Consulting Project
A BCIT Business Consulting Project provides second year Tourism students the opportunity to work over a 10 week period with an organization to conduct extensive market research and prepare a marketing plan or business plan.
Students work in a team of 2 or 3 people to identify potential opportunities, conduct research, and recommend effective solutions. Students complete a comprehensive written report and present an oral presentation to the sponsoring organization outlining the student team’s marketing recommendations and solutions.
Business Consulting Projects are different from traditional co-op and internship programs. Students are not assigned to actual positions, but rather fill a consulting role for businesses and organizations. Each project has a BCIT faculty member that serves as an advisor for the student consulting team. Exit surveys from participating companies show that the completed strategic business solutions have a value that far surpassed their expectations.
