Net-Zero & Passive House Part-time Studies Course

Course details

​This course covers advanced topics for assessing data sources, interpreting, and reporting results of a whole-building life cycle assessment (wbLCA). The course will prepare students to conduct a whole building life cycle assessment and prepare an environmental building declaration by understanding the quality and sources of data, advanced methods, and interpreting results using the Impact Estimator for Buildings web tool. Key topics include: advanced data considerations, EPDs, advanced method issues for Module D (recyclability, biogenic carbon, carbonation, off-gassing), benchmarks, comparisons, and wbLCA consistent with national guidelines. To register for this course, learners must have completed the prerequisite 1160 and 1165 or equivalent experience. This is a pre-requisite for XZEB 1169.​​ Delivery Format: This course is intended to be a hybrid of online live lectures and applied project. The online learning model includes tutorials and project work with office hours with a faculty supervisor and industry advisor.​

  1. This is a 6 week course starting on Jan 9 and ending on Feb 20, 2023. There are 4 online lectures on Wednesdays Jan 11, Jan 25, Feb 1, and Feb 15 (12PM-2PM PST). Instructional sessions are delivered through a live interactive web-lecture through online course portal (BCIT Learning Hub) by industry subject matter expert instructors. Additional independent learning is completed in the online course portal.

  • Describe the sources, quality, gaps, and workarounds that contribute to high-quality input data for wbLCA.
  • Discuss complexities and uncertainties when calculating environmental indicators.
  • Explain how to conduct a sensitivity and contribution analysis to interpret results.
  • Practice using the Impact Estimator for Buildings web tool.
  • Describe how to compare design options and estimate embodied carbon reductions​.
