Geographic Information Systems Part-time Studies Course

Course details

The course starts by examining the field of Cartography and the relationship between Cartographer, Map and End User. Map composition, balance, typography, thematic mapping, and colour are reviewed. Students learn how to communicate well through cartographic principles. Further topics are undertaken for Enhanced Data Analysis and maps visualizations using web applications. The students are exposed to producing maps with an advanced visualization point of view.

Prerequisite(s)

  • 50% in GIST 7108
  • Course registration is restricted to current students registered in a BCIT GIS program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the problems that can exist in map communication.
  • Know when / how to symbolize Points, Lines and Polygons.
  • Properly employ colour and pattern in maps.
  • Properly use annotation (typography) in maps and understand components of typography.
  • Generate an effective single map layout and how to produce a map series.
  • Know how/where to access source map data, such as TRIM.
  • Undertake Enhanced Data Analysis (How to investigate data for spatial patterns).
  • Use advanced Visualization methods with maps (e.g. 3D perspective views).
  • Map Visualizations Using Web Applications.
