Geographic Information Systems Part-time Studies Course

Course details

This course provides theoretical and practical exposure to fundamental GIS algorithms and spatial information data structures. Students will gain an understanding of the programming logic behind GIS computer applications. Topics covered include raster and vector file formats, data conversion and display, view transformations, line clipping, feature generalization, and polygon operations.

Prerequisite(s)

  • 50% in GIST 7100 and 50% in GIST 7130
  • Course registration is restricted to current students registered in a BCIT GIS program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student should be able to:

  • Construct software applications using a current industry programming language.
  • Design spatial data file conversion programs in order to read ASCII coordinate data.
  • Generate compressed binary files using a run-length encoding algorithm.
  • Extract image band data from image files.
  • Research and present a GIS technical topic to an advanced level GIS audience.
  • Compare the problems in various GIS issues by listening to presentations by GIS researchers.
