This comprehensive course is designed to broaden the expertise of registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians who currently provide or will be providing pediatric sexual violence medical evaluation. The focus of this Canadian-based education will be on caring for the sexually abused pediatric population. This evidence-based course will be interactive, case-based and provide practical opportunities for clinicians to obtain feedback on different practice elements including evaluation, documentation, and application of forensic science principles. This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the International Association of Forensic Nurses, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This online course is for students accepted into the Forensic Health Sciences Graduate Certificate program who have completed FSCT 9840. For special approval to register (if you have not been accepted into the GC program), please contact BCIT_Forensics@BCIT.ca . There will be 3 LIVE interactive sessions on Friday: Feb 10, 24 and March 3 @ 5pm-8pm (1700-2000).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply findings in the recent medical literature to the evaluation and management of suspected sexual abuse/assault.
- Identify the dynamics of sexual abuse.
- Formulate an approach to the pediatric health history and rapport building in a child which incorporates medico-legal considerations.
- Determine the role of the clinician in consent management and duty to report legislation as it relates to clinical practice.
- Apply an evidence-based approach to the interpretation of genital examination findings in children and adolescents.
- Evaluate and incorporate evidence-based concepts for documentation and forensic evidence collection.
- Evaluate issues related to transmission, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections to clinical practice.
- Formulate an approach to the assessment of physical abuse-skin injuries in children with suspected sexual abuse.
- Describe the role of the clinician in the criminal and family court setting as it applies to clinical practice.
- Identify aspects of trauma in children who have been sexually abused as it applies to clinical practice.
- Formulate a comprehensive approach to service delivery including consideration for ethical issues in complex cases including cases involving drug-facilitated sexual violence, internet luring, human trafficking, children with disabilities and cultural considerations.
