Course details
This course is a study of prototyping security tools using high-level languages such as Ruby, Python, and Lua. Implementation of basic communication applications using the TCP/IP protocol suite will be introduced. Security applications that will be designed and implemented as part of the course will include packet sniffers, backdoors, logfile parsers, packet crafters, variety of spoofing applications, simple Intrusion Detection and Prevention systems. Also covered will be shell scripting techniques and implementation of shell-scripts to perform system-related tasks. As part of implementing defensive applications, students will also be introduced to basic Linux-based tools and utilities such as Netfilter, cron, etc.

This course will be face to face (F2F) at the Burnaby campus. Attendance is mandatory. No classes on Family Day Monday - Feb 20 and Easter Monday - Apr 10 Students who have been accepted into a Forensics program where this course is a part of the matrix may register without any further approvals. Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Be able to use languages such as Ruby and Python to prototype proof-of-concept applications and test them.
- Be able to design simple Intrusion Prevention systems using shell scripts, cron, and Netfilter.
- Have a detailed understanding of applications such as packet sniffers as a defensive and offensive tool.
- Have an in-depth understanding of how malicious applications such as ARP poisoning, DNS spoofing, stealth backdoors and covert channels are designed and used.
- Gain an in-depth understanding of how to protect against malicious applications.
