Course details
This course provides an overview of the spatial aspects of crime and intelligence analysis. The concept of environmental criminology and the relevance of geographic information systems (GIS) to crime and intelligence analysis will be covered. Students will learn how to use visualization and spatial analysis technologies in order to detect criminal patterns and to forecast the probability, time and location of future criminal events. An integrated crime and intelligence analysis application, the i2 Analyst's Workstation and ESRI ArcView is included.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss theories of crime analysis and crime mapping as they relate to intelligence analysis.
- Assess the major strengths and weaknesses of GIS tools and techniques used in crime mapping and analysis.
- Create a crime profile using maps, geo coding, temporal analysis, pin mapping, pattern analysis, hot spot analysis, choropleth mapping and buffer analysis.
- Detect criminal patterns and potential criminal events using crime analysis spatial software.
- Create superior cartographic maps and related vector graphics.
