The course covers the major areas of crime scene examination, in order to give an in-depth understanding in theories of searching and in dealing with the entire range of physical evidence located during the various types of crime scene searches.

  2. This is a hybrid course. Due to the interactive nature of this offering, it will be ONLINE January 9 – March 12, 2023, AND face-to-face (F2F) for 2 days (March 13 & 14, 2023). The online portion is not live and can be accessed at students’ discretion. Each week allows access to a new module. There are no textbooks required and the instructor will distribute the course material in class and online, however, they will email you before the start with further details. Students who have been accepted into a Forensics program where this course is a part of the matrix may register without any further approvals. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the various types of physical evidence that might be present at an interior crime scene.
  • Explain the various means of scene documentation available and the strengths and weaknesses of each.
  • Given a viable surface, ascertain which fingerprint detection method should be used and demonstrate the correct application of that technique.
  • Explain the value of alternate light sources at a crime scene (and demonstrate their use).
  • Demonstrate the proper technique for the detection and collection of hair/fibre evidence.
  • Demonstrate the proper technique for the detection, enhancement and preservation of footwear impression evidence.
  • Demonstrate the proper handling of ‘DNA’ evidence from its detection and collection at a simulated crime scene to its submission to the lab for analysis.
  • Given a simulated interior crime scene and working as part of a team, demonstrate:
    • Proper scene management techniques
    • Appropriate scene documentation techniques
    • Correctly executed physical/trace evidence detection and collection techniques specific to that scene.
  • Explain the personal safety considerations applicable to each technique considered or situation encountered.
