Course details

The outcome of most investigations usually depends on the information supplied by victims, witnesses and suspects to an investigator. The amount and veracity of this information is of utmost importance. In this course, investigators learn methods and techniques available for interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects to obtain proper, informative and legal statements that will both aid in the investigation and be acceptable to the court.

  • Admission to a Forensic credential program or permission of the Program Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Prepare an interview room describing furnishings.
  • Explain the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Interpret non-verbal cues and their meanings.
  • Apply different interview techniques and approaches including: effective listening, ethics and relating to different personalities.
  • Take a statement correctly.
  • Construct and ask more effective questions.
  • Develop a cognitive interview.
  • Describe basic statement analysis, including the 'VIEW' questionnaire.
  • Conduct a forensic interview (interrogation).
