Course details
Unconscious bias, also called implicit bias, is something everyone possesses. In many cases decisions made by us will be influenced by these biases. Due to their unconscious nature, the impact of these biases occurs without us realizing it. Although unconscious biases can sometimes serve a purpose, they can also lead to poor decision making, unfairness, and discrimination - even by the most well-intentioned of us. Discrimination clearly causes negative impacts on the offended party, but a by-product of discrimination is a lack of diversity within a group or organization. Diversity is always a competitive advantage, when our organization loses out on diversity, we all lose out. Becoming aware of unconscious bias is important but it must be paired with strategies for managing the bias in order to enact positive change. This course will provide an introduction to unconscious bias and steps individuals and organizations can take to reduce the negative impact of unconscious bias. This course aims to help us all understand ourselves and our world better through an examination of our own unconscious biases. The relevance of this course is what you make of it. As you'll learn, we all have biases that we may not be aware of and that shape how we see the world and interact with others. Our hope is that you feel empowered to choose how you can help change our world for the better through your own thoughts and actions. *Note: Thank you for your interest in a BCIT – Free Online Learning course.
