BCIT internal policy
With RPAS use increasing, BCIT’s Safety, Security and Emergency Management (SSEM) department established Policy 7100-PR10 to ensure the safe operation of RPAS on campus.
The policy states that the use of RPAS on BCIT campuses is prohibited without the expressed written consent of BCIT SSEM, following approval of an application.
Transport Canada rules and regulations
Regulation of RPAS falls under Transport Canada and the Canadian Aviation Regulations Part IX—Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. These regulations differ according to the weight of the aircraft and payload and the category of certification.
Drones currently available for use from AV Services weigh under 250 grams. For the most part, Transport Canada RPAS Regulations don’t apply to RPAS in this weight category, but some general rules must be obeyed when operating any drone anywhere in Canada.
See our DJI Mavic Mini Handout for rules, regulations, and safety tips for checking out and using BCIT-owned drones from AV Services [currently suspended due to campus COVID restrictions].
