Why hire BCIT Trades Co-op?

In industries and trades experiencing an aging workforce and future skills shortages, Co-op is a practical solution for both the student and employer to “test” a working relationship, or simply to fill a short-term employment need.

Students in BCIT’s trades programs have already invested in their education by enrolling in their diploma program. These students come from a variety of backgrounds, some direct from high school and some with previous work experience, and all are eager to work in positions related to their diploma programs to apply their classroom training and meet employers’ needs. Prior to beginning their Co-op work placements, students complete a pre-employment training course covering work expectations, how to succeed in the workplace, and communication with co-workers and supervisors.

Top reasons to hire

1. Recruit from BCIT’s top trades education programs

BCIT has a solid reputation for quality trades training taught by instructors who are industry professionals. Students combine theory with practical, hands-on lessons in well-equipped shops.

2. Fill short-term hiring needs without commitment to apprenticeship

Co-op allows you to hire for peak seasons or short term needs without committing to completing an apprenticeship. Students are already receiving their technical training in the classroom and are eager to apply and share these skills in your company.

3. Find future full-time employees

Think of Co-op as a long interview. Both you and your Co-op student have the opportunity to assess whether the fit is the right one.  Often, our graduating Co-op students return to their Co-op employer for full-time work, saving them time and money in future recruitment.

4. Access BCIT Co-op’s services and support

You are not alone in hiring and supporting a student. BCIT’s Co-op staff will guide you through posting your job, scheduling interviews, and facilitating job offers. Additionally, they are available throughout the work term to help with communication or performance discussions.

5. Give back to your trade

Investing in the hands-on training of young trades students helps the future of your trade. Positive, skill-building experiences reinforce the career decisions and help to increase the number of students entering the trade in the future.  Remember, someone gave you your first break when you started out!
