Nurses develop and begin to enact their role in pediatric emergency nursing by exploring an emergency environment and assessing influences pertaining to pediatric patient and family health. Students will apply reflective practice to their role as pediatric emergency nurses. Building upon theory and frameworks from the preceding courses, nurses focus on developing comprehensive assessment skills and applying this knowledge in the care of pediatric patients and their families. A focus of this clinical experience is effective clinical decision making in the context of simple, non-acute through to more advanced acute pediatric patient presentations. In addition, nurses will develop and foster collaborative relationships with patients, families, colleagues, instructors, and other health care providers. The development of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, and communication skills will be emphasized throughout this course. This clinical rotation may be instructor led or preceptor based.

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Perform comprehensive emergency nursing assessments on pediatric patients of all ages.
- Facilitate an appropriate and safe environment to perform assessments and interventions on children using developmentally appropriate strategies.
- Demonstrate clinical decision making that integrates appropriate sources of data, various sources of knowledge, and the unique perspective and meaning of experience pediatric emergency patients and their families (or caregivers).
- Demonstrate an ability to determine the needs of pediatric patients and their families experiencing complex health care concerns.
- Articulate assessment findings (both verbally and in writing) in a comprehensive and systematic manner.
- Develop and utilize interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish partnerships with children, their families (or caregivers), and other members of the health care team.
- Demonstrate personal and professional growth in clinical practice through reflection on pediatric emergency nursing practice.
- Incorporate the tenets of patient and family centered care (PFCC) into emergency nursing care.
