MED Refresher for BS, PSC, and AFF MEDI 2550

Marine Emergency Duties Part-time Studies Course

Course details

This refresher training course is designed to comply with the regulations and to refresh the seafarers’ skills in basic emergency duties through demonstrations and practical drills and exercises. This training will allow seafarers to renew their MED STCW BS, MED PSC, and MED AFF training for a period not exceeding five years. Course hours: 24 hours at BMC and 13.5 hours at JIBC totalling 37.5 hours.

Prerequisite(s)

  • A valid Seafarers Medical or completed Medical Clearance form. 16 years of age or older. A person must hold a training certificate in MED with respect to STCW Basic Safety, MED with respect to Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats, and MED with respect to Advanced Fire Fighting (or equivalent). https://www.bcit.ca/files/transportation/pdf/marine/form_medical_clearance.pdf

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Describe types of potential hazards and emergencies associated on board a vessel.
  • Describe the different types of lifeboats, rescue boats, and life rafts (inflatable and rigid hull), and associated equipment including davits.
  • Describe the use and care of MES (Marine Evacuation System).
  • List the requirements for different types of lifesaving equipment on board a vessel.
  • State factors relating to survival, and actions to be taken for survival and rescue.
  • Demonstrate proper boatmanship and raftmanship (lifeboats, rescue boats, and life rafts [inflatable and rigid hull]).
  • Recognize and explain operation of signalling devices and pyrotechnics.
  • Describe the use of radio communications equipment.
  • State types of rescue including helicopter rescue.
  • Describe use of rescue equipment, and use of rescue boats.
  • Know and be able to demonstrate the use of CPR, mouth-to-mouth/nose respiration, resuscitation kit, and AEDs.
  • Know the symptoms of cardiac arrest, and how to treat various burns.
  • Know and explain the concept of fire theories, and describe the various types of fire-fighting appliances and equipment (Done at JIBC).
  • Demonstrate the proper use of various fire-fighting appliances (Done at JIBC).
  • Explain the organization of emergency parties for shipboard fire fighting (Done at JIBC).
  • Know how to train and coordinate ship crews with regards to fire fighting.
  • Have practical skills and knowledge concerning management and control of injured persons.
  • Perform an incident investigation, and correctly prepare a report.
