Course details
This course helps prepare students for work as a safety officer on a construction, mine or oil and gas site. Students will learn how to clearly and effectively communicate with others on a work site, identify hazards, and apply the Workers Compensation Act and occupational health and safety regulations to their environment. Students will also receive training with hand-held fire extinguishers, and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Upon successfully finishing this course, students will receive a Statement of Completion.
Prerequisite(s)
- It is recommended that students have grade 11 English or equivalent comprehension, and one year of experience on a work site (construction, mining, or oil rig and gas) is beneficial.

All students will need to bring a laptop or tablet device to class to access online course material and complete the exam. The device needs to be capable of running the most recent version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, and Zoom. Students are also expected to understand the basic use of their device prior to the first day of class. There will be a tutorial on navigating the online course material, but there will be no tutorials on using your device. Students are required to have the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation (Reg 296/97) (7691000427) and Workers Compensation Act (Consolidated Ed) (7691001187) on the first day of class. These can be purchased from the Burnaby Campus BCIT Bookstore.
