Course details
A significant part of the work to be performed on automated control systems includes installing and testing the associated cabling for new electric/electronic devices. In this course, students will be made aware of the characteristics of wired, fibreoptic, and wireless media and the installation requirements as per Canadian Electrical Code Section 60, Electrical Communication Systems, and CEC Section 56, Fibreoptics. Differences between industrial and business copper network cable installations, terminations, shielding, and connectorization will be demonstrated. Students will test category-type cables using a wiremap tester and a cable performance analyzer. Emerging power over Ethernet (POE) technology and the related electrical code requirements will be covered. Student lab work will include doing setups to enable the logging of data to allow analyses to be done to display trends and identify opportunities for optimizations. To demonstrate knowledge each student will be formally assessed by their peers and an instructor who will comprise a job interview panel.
